Baltimore City Paper’s editorial staff has joined the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, the
union representing members of the Baltimore Sun, Washington Post and other news
organizations. All seven of the paper’s eligible employees joined the union; the editorial staff
totals 10 people.
Baltimore Sun Media Group, which bought the free alt-weekly in 2014, voluntarily recognized the union.
“Ever since our transition over to The Sun, we’ve continued to put out a great print paper week after week and have stepped up our online presence,” said blogs editor Brandon Weigel. “Our hope is management will recognize this work and invest in the staff and the resources we need.”
That quality has been recognized at awards shows in 2017. The paper recently took home 18 Maryland Delaware D.C. Press Association Awards, and one of its reporters, Lisa SnowdenÂMcCray, won a reporting fellowship with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice earlier this year.
Founded in 1977 by Russ Smith and Alan Hirsch, City Paper has a built a reputation for strong arts coverage, in-depth investigative reporting, longform storytelling, and an independent voice in its coverage. During its 40th anniversary celebration this year, the paper has re-run old stories in print and compi1ed a special photography issue, 40 Years In Photos.
The City Paper boasts a print circulation of 50,000 and a total print readership of 451,000. The paper’s website currently averages 300,000 unique visitors and 1.75 million page views per
month.
